She clutches the warmth.
The mute burn of a sump pump's engine roaring down her throat, the slip-knot strawed to every neck, every crushed blood vessel a bubbling lullaby crying under the torn grin of flesh.
Through caked ash--rain-splashed asphalt crawling up her chest--they lock eyes. The mother can't remember names; the poet can't remember his mother.
